Disciplinary measures

The regulations contained in Chapter 10 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993: 100) form the basis for disciplinary measures. The suspension of students is also regulated in the Ordinance for Suspension of Students from higher education studies (SFS 1987:915).

Disciplinary measures (Chapter 10 paragraph 1, Higher Education Ordinance) may be taken against students who using any aids not permitted in the regulations or in some other way deliberately attempt to mislead or cheat in the case of examinations or where some other form of study performance is being assessed, disrupt or stop in any way teaching, examination or other activity within the framework of the course at the University, disrupt the workings of the University library or other specific institution within the University subject

  • (a) another student to harassment on the basis of ethnic origin , harassment on the basis of religion or other belief system, harassment relating to sexual orientation, harassment on the basis of functional disability or sexual harassment as stated in paragraph 4 of the Act (2001:1286) on equal treatment of students at the University or
  • (b) an employee at the University to such sexual harassments as in paragraph 6 second part, Equal Opportunities Act (1991:433), ethnic harassment or harassment on the basis of what has been stated in paragraph 9a, second part of the Act (1999:130) on measures to be taken against discrimination in working life on the basis of ethnic origin, religion or other belief system, harassments on the basis of handicaps as stated in paragraph 4a, second part of the Act (1999:132) on the prohibition of discrimination in working life on the basis of functional handicaps or paragraph 4a second part of the law (1999:133) on forbidding discrimination in working life on the basis of sexual orientation.

Common cases of occurrence include cheating in examinations, copying of the whole or parts of someone else´s work (essay, PMs, task submissions etc) on the internet as well as prohibited cooperation, prohibited use of the university´s computers and computer network (abuse of computers).

Disciplinary measures include a warning or suspension for a maximum of six months (chapter 10, paragraph 2 Higher Education Ordinance).

Suspension means that the student during the period of suspension may not participate in teaching, examinations, seminars, appear on the library premises, laboratories etc. Suspension means a ban on participation in any form of activity within the framework for education at Halmstad University. The decision on suspension is notified to the National Board of Student Aid (Swedish abbreviation CSNexternal link) who then decide on whether to withdraw student funding during the period of suspension.

The suspension comes into force from the date when the disciplinary committee´s decision has been notified unless otherwise stated. During the time period between the report and notification of the decision, the student may however participate in teaching, examination or equivalent, with certain exceptions.

Persons who suspect cheating should report the matter to the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible for launching an investigation and the student has the right to express her / his version of events in relation to the report. The head of the student affairs department then launches an enquiry into the case and allows the accused student the right to explain her / his actions. It is also the Vice-Chancellor who can elect to drop the enquiry, to issue a formal warning to the student or pass the matter on to the disciplinary committee to take the case further. The disciplinary committee is made up of the Vice-Chancellor as chairman, a legal representative who is or has been a judge together with a representative from the teaching staff and two student representatives.
