Safety at the University

The University should be a safe and secure work place for both staff and students. The University should strive to implement routines which facilitate the well-functioning of daily business and which ensure that high levels of quality are maintained. The University should also, as far as possible, ensure that costs for injuries and financial losses should be minimised. All members of staff and students have a responsibility for the application of safety measures within their own areas of jurisdiction.

Fire and evacuation

In our everyday work we are surrounded by sources of noise: telephones both mobile and landlines, electronic doors which are open, burglar alarms, other warning signals and fire alarms. Sometimes it can feel like we are surrounded by an excess of noise. The sounding of the fire alarm should not under any circumstances be treated in the same way as the electronic 'beep' of an unclosed door. This would indeed be most unfortunate and something which we all need to avoid as far as possible. A few words of advice might however be useful...

1. If you hear an alarm, immediately identify what kind of sound it is and where it is coming from. Fire alarms are bells which ring with a shrill, piercing sound.
2. Lecturing staff or the head of school / department should gather students and staff and immediately guide the group out to the designated meeting place (which is marked on the evacuation route plan) at which point everyone should wait for a status report. WALK CALMLY — DO NOT RUN!
3. Do not re-enter the building or leave the designated area until you have been informed that the danger has passed. Keep your eyes on what is happening in your immediate surroundings.

In case of emergency, dial 112.
You can always dial the emergency number 112 directly from a University telephone.
