Halmstad University, as one of the more recently established universities in the country, has been successful in developing its range of degree courses and programmes as well as attracting students. The University also carries out edge-cutting research into numerous disciplines, many of which are of high quality as measured by national and in many cases international yardsticks. The University is continually developing with new courses, degree programmes and research initiatives being offered as well as through the expansion of the existing campus area.
In recent years the University has been working actively to develop a clearly defined academic and organisational profile. The profile is based on knowledge and expertise ventures involving the three areas of excellence which have been identified within the University. Within the Organisation, Region and Society area of excellence, subjects studied include product development, management, entrepreneurship and business enterprise, work science, economics and business administration, financial mathematics, media and communication science and political science. The area of Products, Processes and Services includes engineering and technology (eg computer, electronic, construction, mechanical, environmental and energy engineering) mecatronics, biomechanics and informatics. The third and final area, that of Life Quality, Welfare and Culture, encompasses nursing, sport, health, psychology, sociology and pedagogy. Teacher education and the humanities also come under this heading. To promote interplay between the three domains, the themes of innovation, cooperation and wellbeing are interwoven with the areas of excellence.
Students at Halmstad University are encouraged to think in terms of business enterprise and new and innovative conceptualisation. In many degree programmes, the work of the students is organised in the form of projects and students are provided with training in project management. Each year, a number of degree project scholarships are awarded to innovative students.
The multi-disciplinary profile with cooperative ventures involving the areas of excellence is also seen in the various research environments of the University. Research is pursued to a large extent in close cooperation with companies and public sector organisations.
The diversity seen in the University's research and teaching gives rise to the special atmosphere at Halmstad University and which can be summarized in two words: community and proximity. In this way interdisciplinary and cooperative ventures over traditional subject boundaries are natural and self-evident in this context. But there is more to it than simply thinking outside the box of academic tradition. The University's cooperative initiatives with the surrounding society are extensive. There are a large number of projects in which the University cooperates with the business sector, local clubs, associations and other organisations and the public sector both locally and in other parts of the world.
