PROFESSOR IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS with specialization in Computational Science and Engineering (IDE 14/11)

Halmstad University invites applications for a position as full Professor of Applied Mathematics with a research direction towards Computational Science and Engineering (Beräkningsteknik in Swedish) at the School of Information Science, Computer and Electrical Engineering. The expected starting date is 2012-01-01, or as soon as possible after this date. 

Scientific focus of the position:
The research emphasis of the position is numerical simulation and optimization of different types of complex physical models and computational problems, typically expressed in terms of systems of differential equations. The scientific area includes the construction and analysis of numerical methods, algorithms, and their implementations in robust and efficient software for high-performance computing systems. Important issues concern analysis of convergence and stability properties of the numerical methods.

By its focus, the professorship shall complement and strengthen the ongoing research activities at our School in computer science, physics, and electronics (www.hh.se/eis).

The appointed professor is expected to form an internationally recognized research group in computational science and engineering, engaging the present group of mathematicians and statisticians.

The major part of the employment is intended for research, but teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students are also important parts of the employment.

Qualifications:
"In order to be considered qualified as a professor within academic areas outside of the performing and visual artistic domain it is necessary for the applicant to demonstrate a record of both scholarly and teaching achievement.
 The same weight will be given to the assessment of teaching merits as with the assessment of scholarly achievement." (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, § 3).

Candidates must have a distinguished record of original research work in computational science and proven teaching and leadership abilities. The main emphasis in the assessment of the applicant is on scientific skills and productivity.  A strong emphasis will also be placed upon pedagogical skills. In addition, administrative skills as well as skills in developing and leading projects and personnel will be judged as being of high value.

Assessment criteria:
For employment as professor the following assessment criteria are in place:
Ability to develop, lead and carry out research of the highest international quality in Applied Mathematics/Computational Science and Engineering.
Experience from developing complex models in applied physics and engineering.
Ability to develop and to lead a research group, and to collaborate with other researchers within academia and industry.
Ability to attract external research funding.
Experience from supervising PhD students to their doctorates.
Ability to develop courses on different academic levels and to carry out high-quality teaching.
 
The specific weight given to each of the achievements above should be decided upon in each individual case.

Salary level:
The salary is to be settled by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level required by the candidate.

A statement covering the applicant´s scholarly and teaching merits together with other areas of experience.
An attested curriculum vitae with statement of references, clearly documented and attested with enclosed certificates.
A comprehensive list of scholarly publications.
A maximum of fifteen publications.
Attested documents which demonstrate the applicant´s ability to develop and to lead research and  teaching activities. 
A document that describes the applicant´s experience in developing extramural and community-wide cooperation and administration.
A statement of intent with regard to which goals and visions the applicant wishes to achieve if successful.
 
All enclosed copies of original documents must be attested.
