Prerequisites

It is very important to know about complex numbers and polynomials. This is because the representation used in this course to describe digital systems is chosen as the difference equation, which in turn can be expressed as a polynomial equation. There are other possible and equivalent representations, for example state space models, which uses matrices instead of polynomials. These are mostly avoided in this course, so you do not need to be a matrix-algebra-wizard. But some matrix algebra is needed anyway in the formulation of system identification, so it is good to have some knowledge about it. Since the difference equation is used both for the description of system as well as for signals, you do not need to know about the Z-transform. Basic linear algebra and in particular how to solve linear equation systems you need to know already.

Exercises

After each lecture there are exercises the students should work independently to solve. Consultation (questions) related to the exercises can be done with the teacher after making an appointment. The exercises should be handed in for each student indivdually as a short written report.

Examination

Examination is done by the exercises which should be reported by written solutions. A final oral examination may also be required if the performance from the  exercises is not enough or for higher grades.  A self-evaluation formPDF (pdf, 41 kB) can be studied in preparation for the oral examination.

Literature

Digital controlPDF (pdf, 790 kB), by Ulf Holmberg. Although, not needed for this course, I may propose Computer-controlled systems, by Astrom and Wittenmark, as extra reading or reference literature.
