Programme: The course is included as an elective course in the Master Programme in Embedded and Intelligent Systems 120 credits and the Master programme in Information technology 120 credits, plus as an obligatory course in the Master's Programme in Computer Network Engineering 60 credits.

Course content and organization

The student shall increase her/his understanding of important methods, architectures, and implementations of modern communication systems and networks. The student shall acquire experience in obtaining information from advanced level literature and scientific papers, and in the critical examination of scientific results from the area of communication, including communication in the Internet, Local Area Networks, and other types of networks.

Selected subjects will be treated in the form of lectures and article writing. The focus is put on currently important fields, which means that the subjects for article writing will be adapted before the actual course start. Possible subjects to be treated are: Virtual Local Area Networks, TCP details, multimedia communication, traffic models, switch and router architectures, protocols for optical and/or wireless networks, networks in parallel and distributed systems, Internet Quality of Service, admission control, and intervehicular communication.

Each student shall, in group, write a paper (research overview) to get a deeper understanding of a specific subfield.

Teaching formats

The teaching consists of lectures, paper writing, and presentation of the paper.


Examination is done in form of a written exam, a written article and a presentation of the article.


Data Communication I (7.5 credits) or equivalent knowledge. Basic prerequisites for the master program.

Course literature

Scientific papers available through the University library, slide copies from the lectures. The course literature will be updated for the actual course start to, e.g., reflect recent advances in the field.
