Doctoral education in Innovation Sciences

Innovation Science and postgraduate area includes research in the social and behavioral areas, technology and science with a common focus on innovation, its creation, emergence, commercialisation and establishment in the market.

The research area

Innovation Sciences at Halmstad University is focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, learning, corporate governance, management, business development and marketing, especially from an international perspective and includes studies of how internal and external factors affecting innovation processes and how ideas become successful on the market.

Since the 1960s, the scientific study of innovations, ie downgrades, diffusion and use of new technologies, products, processes, services or organizational solutions developed into an increasingly independently and in an academic context accepted research and teaching.

The area of innovation science emergence can be described in terms of economic development and changes in business and society at large. New scientific knowledge, technological development and related new products, services and business models create a need to bridge and integrate traditional academic subjects and develop new academic disciplines.

Innovation Science designates an area where knowledge and understanding of the processes and dynamics of innovations can be developed and thus support industry and society in the future development of innovation and economic growth. This is done by developing new products and services, new technologies, new business models, the emergence of new knowledge-intensive industries and, not least, by the renewal of social functions.

Innovation Research is a research and teaching area where diverse subjects work together around the common phenomenon of innovation. Innovation Science is an applied research field where proximity to practice and empirical phenomena are of central importance as the basis for research and knowledge. Innovations seen in a broader perspective, as both products and processes, services and organizational innovations.

Four key aspects of the innovation process

  • The dynamics of innovation activities and opportunities for ideas to be able to assert themselves on the market or among the users.
  • Let empirical phenomena guide the formulation of research questions, research, and methods in the implementation of the research.
  • Take note of and build upon the successful training programs in the field of innovation which are already given at Halmstad University.
  • Bond to the research in the area that is well established at the University and thus enable the development of more integrated understanding of innovation, product, service and business development for industry, academia and society more broadly.

The doctoral program in Innovation Sciences should be characterised by a strong connection to practice ie be empirically close. For every doctoral student a structured training based on an individual study plan will be designed. Each individual doctoral student during his or her training stimulated and offered the opportunity for international exchange in the form of one or more shorter stays at a foreign university.

Study follow-up

The overall objective of monitoring and quality assurance of postgraduate education in innovation science is to create and maintain an internationally competitive doctoral degree in the subject, to thereby prepare graduate students for advanced tasks for research purposes in universities, public administration and the business community.
