The Rydberg Laboratory for Applied Sciences (RLAS)

Researchers at the Rydberg Laboratory for Applied Sciences (RLAS) are drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical engineering, nanotechnology, physics, chemistry, biomechanics, biomedicine, biology, energy research, and environmental science.

Over the last ten years, the laboratory’s research groups have undergone a vigorous and sustained expansion, thanks to longstanding research collaborations and strong regional and national links to industry. This development is continually reinforced by the initiation of new research projects, and by recruiting new partners to the network.

In a wider perspective, the laboratory's research has great potential for providing important benefits to society through technical and scientific innovation. This might involve the development of future sources of energy, innovative materials and their applications, and methods that help industry remain competitive in the sustainable society of the future.

RLAS has a strong academic profile. Its members have longstanding, well-established contacts and collaborations with partners at other academic institutions, in industry, and in society generally. Post-graduate training is provided through partnerships with other universities and industry, and there is a tradition of attracting highly competitive research grants, and of a high rate of publication in prestigious international journals.

Regional, national, and international cooperation

The research at RLAS is highly relevant to the needs of industry, and to other actors in society. Many of the projects are of interest to the commercial or the public sector, and they attract a range of collaborative partners, who work closely together with the laboratory.

The majority of the doctoral students at RLAS are partly financed by industry, and many members of staff are on secondment from commercial firms. Cooperation is also strengthened by partnership in research projects, as well as through directly commissioned research.

Collaborative projects between RLAS, industry, and the public sector have attracted financing from the Swedish Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen), Vinnova and the EU. Partners include the Swedish Board of Agriculture, Halland County Council, Region Halland, Öresundkraft, and Halland’s Rural Economy and Agricultural Society.

Research in the applied sciences at RLAS is well-integrated into the international research community, with research findings being disseminated through presentations at major conferences and articles in leading international journals.

Creating RLAS enables MTEK and BLESS to become stronger research environments, and will improve their ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary research projects.


The Rydberg Core Laboratory was inaugurated November 4, 2004. The laboratory is named after the famous Swedish physicist and mathematician Johannes Robert (Janne) Rydberg born in Halmstad 1854.
