SI Scholarship holders starting local network

Halmstad University now has so many international students that are Swedish Institute scholarship holders that they are starting a local network within the frame of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL).

At Halmstad University, there are 13 SI scholarship holders this year. The scholarships are awarded to students from certain countries who wish to study abroad and are able do so thanks to the Swedish Institute covering their expenses.

Victor Nyakundi Pursuing from Kenya, who is studying the Master's Programme in Strategic Entrepreneurship, has been chosen as the SI Halmstad chair person.

The Halmstad SI chapter leadership is planning to arrange two events next year; a conference with a theme around reducing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical work experience, and a visit to a company with a sustainable development theme.

– The Swedish Institute does a lot to support us, for example with a grant to arrange these events. My expectation is that, with the Network, we will be able to integrate, share experiences, learn from each other and more importantly enhance our capabilities in our different professions. And equally important to have fun while we are studying in Sweden, says Victor Nyakundi Pursuing.

He became aware of the Swedish Institute through a friend when he was a staff member at the UN in Kenya, working with a development programme.

– I have switched from finance to development and I hope to be able to start a company with help from High Five. I want to give back to Kenya. I want to invest in ideas and help young people fulfil their dreams and connect with the right company to do so, explains Victor Nyakundi Pursuing.

Build a network and become a better leader

NFGL already exists in 14 places around Sweden, from Lund in the south to Luleå in the north, and includes about 400 students. The purpose of the NFGL local networks is to give SI scholarship holders the opportunity to arrange events, workshops, seminars and visits to companies around Sweden and to build strong networks with each other and with different parts of Swedish society. The goal is to strengthen leadership skills, increase the ability to manage projects and strengthen networks between scholarship holders as well as helping them to build the foundation of a future Alumni network. The NFGL provides the possibility to visit companies and aims to improve the goodwill and knowledge about Sweden.
