Halmstad University has one of Sweden's strongest research environments in information and communications technology (ICT) and is, therefore, part of the national investment in strategically important research. The fact the Knowledge Foundation has now decided to fund two major research ventures at Halmstad University, together with Swedish industry, is further evidence of the University's quality.
"We are extremely proud that we both have a new research profile and an extension of our current research profile of CERES," says acting vice-chancellor Carina Eriksson Ihlström. "It means a lot for the university's image and for the research conducted here."
The research profile CAISR focuses on making the system "intelligent". Examples are vehicles that are able to detect, recognise and communicate with people around them or have the ability to monitor themselves (for example: to see if the brakes are working properly or if the air filter needs replacing). Other examples are systems in health technology that can monitor itself to warn if something seems to be going wrong, or can be of assistance in home-care. Companies participating in the venture from the start are: Danaher Motion in Särö, Volvo Technology Corporation, Optronic AB, Redsense Medical, Tappa Service and NEAT Electronics AB.
"For the University, this is a strategically important initiative to further develop an area where we have had, for a longer period of time now, a good standard of education and competent students," says Thorsteinn Rögnvaldsson, professor of computer science, vice-chairman of the University's Faculty Board and Head of University's application for CAISR. "The timing is perfect as we have just started postgraduate studies in these areas and have recruited several new employees from international universities."
CERES is about embedded systems, i.e. how the electronics of calculations and communications can be built into products to give them new properties, not least by interacting with each other.
"For us, this means that we shall focus more on the "smartness" in interacting embedded systems," says Bertil Svensson, a professor of computer engineering and head of CERES. "We shall develop smart communication solutions that will ensure the characteristics and qualities of communication as the application requires. For example: in health technology products or services; as well as in transport systems. We will also show how to use many different embedded processors in an energy efficient way. We will further develop our international cooperation, while, and at the same time, naturally continue to strengthen the collaboration with our Swedish business partners."
The purpose of the Knowledge Foundation's funding is to contribute to help build and consolidate an internationally competitive research environment in a well-defined and industry-relevant knowledge-area. A requirement of the Knowledge Foundation (in addition to scientific excellence) is that industry often contributes with as much funding as the foundation.
