Halmstad University’s study programmes top the Swedish rankings in collaborating with industry

Halmstad University’s study programmes are winners when it comes to collaborating with enterprise. According to a survey performed by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, the Master’s programme in mechanical engineering is the country number one programme in all categories when it comes to harmonising the study programme with industry. Halmstad University also has four study programmes in the top ten.

Each year the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise measures how successful Sweden’s universities are in collaborating with companies. In this year’s comparative survey of 750 study programmes, Halmstad University came out on top once more.

Ten percent of the 100 top-ranking study programmes in the country belong to Halmstad University. Six of the top ten study programmes in the field of engineering can be found at Halmstad University. Halmstad University has four programmes in the top ten study programmes in all categories.

One of Sweden’s elite universities when it comes to collaborating with industry. Ten percent of the 100 top-ranking study programmes in the country belong to Halmstad University. Ten of its study programmes received a diploma from the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise which performed the survey.

“Halmstad University excels in industry collaboration. There is no other seat of learning that produces there kinds of results, which we are delighted with. Halmstad University has four study programmes in the Swedish top ten and belongs to Sweden’s elite universities when it comes to collaboration,” says Mikaela Almerud, university expert at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise. 

”A natural part of the study process”

The programme which is ranked number one, the Master’s Programme in Mechanical Engineering, is provided by Halmstad University in collaboration with Örebro University and the University of Skövde. Aron Chibba is Dean of Studies for Halmstad’s part of the master’s programme, and the university’s other highly-ranked mechanical engineering study programmes.

“We are delighted. We knew we were good, but finding out that we performed so strongly in comparison with our peers means a lot to us. It’s a natural part of our study process – students on virtually all our courses work on live projects that are harmonised with industry players. We have built up a vast contact network and have a strong collegial dedication to collaboration. It’s how we work,” says Aron Chibba.

Faster employment and higher salaries

Other Halmstad University study programmes that rank highly are the Computer, Electrical and Mechatronic engineering programmes, which share ninth place in the 750 compared programmes. Sustainable Tourism Development is in ninth place in the “other areas” category.

Last autumn, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise presented its report on the quality of Swedish university study programmes, Högskolekvalitet 2012, which shows that students who have collaborated successfully with industry during their studies tend to find employment more quickly after graduating. They are also more likely to find more qualified jobs and a have a higher average starting salary.

Putting theory into practice in their studies. Staffan Johansson and Anton Rylander are both on the Computer Engineer Programme at Halmstad University. In their view, contacts and collaboration with businesses during their studies is extremely rewarding. "It looks good on your CV and you get work life experience – and usually a summer job," they say. "Their" company, where they work on recurring projects during their study period, is HMS Industrial Networks in Halmstad.
