Adapting new city districts for autonomous vehicles through EU funded research

Halmstad University, together with ten other organisations in seven different countries, has received funding for a new research project for the development of smart cities. The project aims to facilitate the planning and development of new city districts so that they are adapted for electric autonomous vehicles.

”Halmstad University has collaborated with the automotive industry for many years in the development of autonomous vehicles. Therefore, it is very pleasing that we in this project also cooperate with the public sector in city development.”

Magnus Jonsson, Professor in Real-time Systems at Halmstad University

The project is called SUV (Stimulating the Up-take of Shared and Electric Autonomous Vehicles by Local Authorities) and brings together universities, transport organisations and municipalities for a sustainable development of urban environments.

“Halmstad University has collaborated with the automotive industry for many years in the development of autonomous vehicles. Therefore, it is very pleasing that we in this project also cooperate with the public sector in city development. This project is well in line with the University’s profile area Smart Cities and Communities”, says Magnus Jonsson, Professor in Real-time Systems at Halmstad University.

Varberg municipality is one of the project partners:

“This research project will contribute with valuable inspiration and knowledge at a time when Varberg is growing rapidly. We look forward to working closely with Halmstad University”, says Louise Wallmander, Development Strategist at Varberg municipality.

Modelling different scenarios

Halmstad University will in the project contribute with technologies for connected and collaborative autonomous vehicles. One example of such technology is the communication between vehicles, as well as between vehicles and the infrastructure. The University will also contribute with technical competence in modelling different scenarios with autonomous vehicles. Examples of these scenarios are the traffic flow in cities and how to connect autonomous driving in different environments, such as between a restricted harbour area and the public road network.

More about SUV

The research project SUV (Stimulating the Up-take of Shared and Electric Autonomous Vehicles by Local Authorities) is funded by the Interreg North Sea Region, which is a transnational programme co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Halmstad University receives just over SEK 1.5 million for its part of the project. The entire project budget amounts to approximately SEK 40 million.

The researchers at Halmstad University are Magnus Jonsson, Professor of Real-Time Systems, and Alexey Vinel, Professor of Data Communication. The project group will also be expanded with a postdoctoral fellow. The project starts in September 2019 and will last for three years.
