Business development in green industries

Halland’s agricultural industry faces several challenges that must be handled wisely in order to remain competitive in the future.

Background

One of the main challenges relates to an aging group among entrepreneurs in sole proprietor agricultural companies, where almost every third entrepreneur is over 65 years of age. With a development where the next generation chooses other career opportunities, agriculture must look at diversity as a greater development resource, not only as a survival strategy, but as a competitive advantage in order to meet future societal challenges.

The purpose of the project is to contribute knowledge regarding diversity and how diversity work can be a competitive advantage for sustainable and viable agriculture in Halland. Issues we want to highlight are; How can the business model for green industries develop with a diversity perspective? What are the challenges and opportunities? How can diversity efforts be developed into a competitive advantage – a development resource for agriculture in Halland? Through knowledge and education on diversity, we want to test new ways of working with skills enhancement and recruitment, in order to meet future challenges.

Project initiatives

The goal of several of our project initiatives, is to develop an understanding of diversity as an important competitive advantage in terms of sustainability, profitability and health within green industries. Today, two integration projects are being run with a focus on business model innovations in green industries, namely “Future Agriculture” and “Green Innovation”.

Halmstad University is the project owner and implements the projects together with the Rural Economy and Agricultural Society of Halland, the Swedish Public Employment Service, the Swedish Migration Agency and the County Administrative Board. The projects are financed by Region Halland and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.
