Increased risk of power outages on campus

Due to the current situation with limited access to electricity during the winter, the University may be affected by power outages. In this article, you can find more information about how it can affect you as a student, and what you do in the event of a power outage.

The limited availability of electricity can lead to power outages in society, which can also affect the University. When there is a particularly high risk of a power outage, Svenska kraftnät, the authority responsible for the Swedish power system, will warn and urge everyone to substantially reduce their electricity consumption, thereby reducing the risk of power outages. The most critical periods are weekdays between 8 am and 11 am and between 3 pm and 7 pm.

Before and during a power outage

When Svenska kraftnät warns of power outages, the University will inform about the increased risk on the student web. It is then good to, if possible, avoid using the lifts on campus. You can also prepare by keeping mobile and computer batteries fully charged, and if possible have charged power banks.

If you are on campus during a power outage, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have an exam in progress, you will receive instructions in the room. Otherwise, you must leave as soon as possible. Staff will ask those who still remain to leave campus. Take personal belongings such as mobile phone and computer with you.

Whether you have a lecture or you are studying, you should go home, because no one knows how long the power outage will last. You can count on the situation to be back to normal the next day if you do not receive any other information.

About the electricity situation

The University must be prepared to both reduce electricity consumption and manage a possible disconnection of the electricity, just like all businesses and households in Sweden. The background is the limited availability of electricity during the winter. If there is not enough electricity to supply ordinary electricity consumption, a power shortage occurs. This can lead to shorter power outages, also at the University. In some cases, the power outages are planned by Svenska kraftnät. This can happen at very short notice. Everyone is encouraged to actively follow the news and keep track of the electricity situation.
