How to apply
You can apply to extend you permit online and you should submit your application while your current permit is still valid. In most cases you will need to pay a fee.
Requirements for extending a residence permit
To extend your residence permit, you must
- hold a valid passport.
- be accepted on a course of full-time study at a university or university college.
- have made acceptable progress in your studies.
- be able to support yourself during the period you are requesting a permit for.
- have a comprehensive insurance policy (if you are accepted for studies for less than one year).
The admission letter (Notification of Selection Results) confirms that you are covered by a health insurance from the University. If you apply online, you can enclose your admission letter as proof of health insurance.
To show that you have made acceptable progress in your studies, please enclose your transcripts. You can print them from Student Ladok or visit Service Center.

Residence permit after studies
If you have a residence permit for studies and have completed your studies, you can get a residence permit for twelve months to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business in Sweden.
Requirements for obtaining a residence permit
To obtain a residence permit you have to
- still be in Sweden. Your application may be refused if you have left Sweden after completing your studies.
- hold a passport that is valid for the whole period you intend to be in Sweden.
- have had a residence permit for university college education lasting at least two terms.
- your last residence permit must have been a residence permit for university college studies.
- have completed your studies – this means all of your courses must be completed.
- plan to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business.
- be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit.
- have a comprehensive insurance policy.
