Residence permit extension
If you are admitted to a two year programme or if you have not completed your studies, you need to apply for extension of the permit for the second year or remaining studies.
Extend your permit for studies
You can apply to extend your permit online via the Swedish Migration Agency. Please note that the application must be submitted while your current permit is still valid. An application fee might be required.
Requirements for extending a residence permit
To extend your residence permit, you must
- hold a valid passport.
- be accepted on a course of full-time study at a university or university college, which requires your presence in Sweden.
You can attach a copy of your original admission letter (Notification of Selection Results) if you have not changed education. - have made acceptable progress in your studies.
Please enclose your transcripts. You can print them from Ladok for students or visit Service Center. - be able to support yourself during the period you are requesting a permit for.
- have a comprehensive insurance policy (if you are not registered in Sweden and if you are accepted for studies for less than one year).
If you apply online, you can enclose your admission letter as proof of health insurance. - certificate from the organiser of higher studies regarding remaining studies, if the studies have taken longer than expected or during your degree project.
If your studies have taken longer than expected during your final semester, i.e during your thesis work, you are also required to provide a letter/certificate from your programme director/supervisor in addition to the above documents.

Residence permit after studies
If you have a residence permit for studies and have completed your studies, you can get a residence permit for twelve months to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business in Sweden.
Requirements for obtaining a residence permit
To obtain a residence permit you have to
- still be in Sweden. Your application may be refused if you have left Sweden after completing your studies.
- hold a passport that is valid for the whole period you intend to be in Sweden.
- have had a residence permit for university college education lasting at least two semesters.
- your last residence permit must have been a residence permit for university college studies.
- have completed your studies.
Transcripts of all completed courses must be enclosed. - plan to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business.
- be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit.
- have a comprehensive insurance policy (if you are not registered in Sweden). The health insurance provided by the University for students admitted for less than one year is no longer valid as you have completed your studies.
