Surveys in doctoral education
Taking account of doctoral students’ and supervisors’ experiences and views is an important part of Halmstad University’s work to develop and assure the quality of doctoral education. Through recurring surveys, the University gains valuable knowledge about how doctoral education is experienced. The results are used as a basis for developing the content of doctoral education, supervision and doctoral education environments.
Doctoral student barometer
The Doctoral Student Barometer is a recurring survey aimed at all active doctoral students at Halmstad University. Its purpose is to give doctoral students the opportunity to share their experiences and provide feedback on doctoral education and their study situation. The Barometer is one way of ensuring doctoral students’ right to exercise influence over their education and situation. The results are used to identify strengths and areas for development and form the basis for planning improvement measures at subject, School and University level.
The Doctoral Student Barometer is used, among other things, as a basis for the Schools’ annual follow-up of doctoral education and for their operational planning. The results are also analysed by University Administrative Support in order to develop relevant support measures, and by the Committee for Doctoral Education, which can identify the need for quality-enhancement measures at University-wide level.
Supervisor survey
The Supervisor Survey is conducted in conjunction with the Doctoral Student Barometer and is aimed at all active supervisors in doctoral education at Halmstad University. Its purpose is to contribute to quality assurance and the development of supervision and the delivery of doctoral education.
The survey provides an overall picture of supervisors’ experiences, and the results are used as a basis for the Schools’ annual follow-up of doctoral education, as well as by the Committee for Doctoral Education and University Administrative Support in their work to develop support and activities for supervisors.
Course evaluations
At the end of each course, a course evaluation is conducted in which doctoral students are given the opportunity to provide feedback on the course content, structure and delivery. Course evaluations are a central part of quality assurance and form the basis for course analyses used in the continued development of courses.
