Focus area Smart Cities and Communities

The University-wide and multidisciplinary focus area brings together research, education and collaboration in the field of smart cities and communities, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized cities. The intention is to support society with knowledge and solutions to create and maintain smart and sustainable cities.

Halmstad University defines smart cities and communities as cities and communities that aim to be sustainable by using information and communication technologies where it provides added value. Despite the fact that most people live in smaller towns, most current research results and examples of smart cities are related to megacities. At Halmstad University, we focus on the specific challenges and opportunities that exist in small and medium-sized cities.

A majority of the research carried out within the focus area takes place within the framework of five multidisciplinary research programmes, which include researchers from all the University’s Schools.
