Fab Lab for researchers
Want to take your research to the next level? Fab Lab is a university‑wide resource where research from all our schools and research programmes has access to state‑of‑the‑art equipment. Halmstad University’s Fab Lab is a meeting place for researchers and companies from the region, the rest of Sweden and internationally.
We share the goal of democratising access to Fab Lab’s tools for technical research and innovation. A Fab Lab is a manufacturing network, a distributed technical education campus and a distributed research laboratory working to digitalise manufacturing and promote next‑generation and personal fabrication.
Here you will find 3D printing mainly in plastics and composites, laser and waterjet cutting, and scanning and measurement of objects from cubic metres down to cubic micrometres, from car bodies to dragonflies’ feet, nanotubes and single atoms. At Fab Lab Halmstad, you can learn to use digital fabrication and technologies in one of the Nordic region’s best‑equipped machine parks.
Research projects

Ingenjör 4.0
Continuing education and the transfer of the latest research go hand in hand. In this project, 13 higher education institutions collaborate to develop short, 20‑hour modules in digital manufacturing/Industry 4.0. Halmstad University and Fab Lab contribute to the development of three of the sixteen module areas.

FORMILL
The project is expected to establish access to the newly developed, bio‑based raw material Formill. The aim is to establish material production and create a network of licensed “Formillers” who can manufacture products in Formill, in order to increase the value‑creation from biomass and thereby contribute to a bio‑based society.

SAMMprint
The project will demonstrate and inspire successful, sustainable implementation of affordable metal AM technologies using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). At present, metal FDM prints are not yet fully commercially competitive and need further improvements.
Collaboration networks
Research linked to Fab Lab Halmstad involves broad collaboration with many companies and organisations. The research also benefits from the Nordic and international Fab Lab networks, which may be the most important collaboration platforms.

Fab Lab Veberöd Hub – a platform for research
Together with Smarta Byar in Veberöd, Skåne, Fab Lab Halmstad contributes to building a micro‑Fab Lab. This “digital village” is a perfect platform for connecting research and developing Veberöd into the research hub it aims to be. A recurring theme is digitalisation and testing in a unique village environment.

A 3D‑printer has been installed in Veberöd to develop both artisanal and industrial applications of 3D‑printed clay products using local clay resources.
