Halmstad University sports research among the top 150 in the world
Halmstad University’s research in sports science is ranked among the world’s top 101–150 universities in the 2024 Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments, conducted by Shanghai Ranking.

For several years, Halmstad University has been ranked among the top 300 universities in sports science. In 2024, the University has climbed to the 101–150 range. Urban Johnson, Professor of Psychology and one of the University’s sports science researchers, is proud of the placement.
“We have worked strategically and diligently to develop our potential for publishing scientific papers in recent years. This ranking suggests that we have been successful. In 2022, we began specifically focusing on improving our ranking to reach the 151–200 range, and now, two years later, we have managed to climb even higher than we expected. Despite having fewer staff and lower research funding, we have achieved a better ranking than universities in Sweden that have a stronger emphasis on sports-related research. We are proud of that!”
About Shanghai Ranking
In 2016, Shanghai Ranking first published the Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments, which highlights the performance of over 300 universities with sports-related research worldwide. The ranking enables sports-related research units to compare themselves with peers outside of multidisciplinary universities. The top 300 universities are ranked based on publications, citations, citations per publication, publications in journals ranked among the top 25 per cent, and publications produced through international collaboration. The bibliometric data is collected from the Web of Science database over a five-year period. Among the top 300 universities in the 2024 ranking, 12 are dedicated sports universities.
