What is the Notification of the defence of a doctoral thesis ceremony (spikning/nailing), and why is it done?
The ceremony is an academic ritual associated with the presentation of a doctoral student's licentiate or doctoral thesis. The doctoral student has a nail and hammer and ceremonially nails a copy of the thesis is on our research wall, a designated place at the university for public viewing. This must be done 3 weeks before the defence of the thesis, and the thesis is thus public.
