Professor’s portrait: “Research isn’t just about science – it’s about people”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the world at a remarkable pace. But how can we ensure that this powerful technology is both trusted and understood by people? At Halmstad University, Professor Grzegorz J. Nalepa is developing AI systems with a human-centric approach. His research, which spans over computer science, philosophy, law, and social sciences, aims to build AI that not only functions effectively but also resonate with human values.
”Studying philosophy extended my perspective on AI, especially regarding ethical considerations and the human mind. It gave me a broader understanding of the societal impact of these technologies.”

For Grzegorz J. Nalepa, the future of AI lies in creating useful and trustworthy systems, focusing on making these technologies understandable to the users.
“AI isn’t just about making machines that seem to think and solve problems for us. It’s about making machines that humans can understand, and that’s where the perspective on trust comes in”, he says.
Grzegorz J. Nalepa is one of the AI research leads of the EU-funded Horizon project PEER, where the researchers develop human-centric AI technologies in close collaboration with companies. The initiative involves not only computer scientists but also researchers from social sciences and the humanities, emphasising the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Grzegorz J. Nalepa is also a part of the strategic research environment ELLIIT that conducts research in information technology and mobile communications.
A lifelong passion for technology
Grzegorz J. Nalepa’s interest in AI began at an early age when he received a Commodore computer from his father.
“I spent countless hours learning how to program it, understanding how it worked, and experimenting with electronics. My father, who is an electrical engineer, played a big role in nurturing this curiosity”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
This early fascination with technology, combined with a deep interest in science fiction, particularly the works of Stanislaw Lem, inspired Grzegorz J. Nalepa to pursue robotics and computer science studies. However, his academic path didn’t stop there. He also obtained a master’s degree in philosophy, which later led to a decade-long collaboration in cognitive science.
“Studying philosophy extended my perspective on AI, especially regarding ethical considerations and the human mind. It gave me a broader understanding of the societal impact of these technologies”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
Shaping the future of AI
Throughout his career, Grzegorz J. Nalepa has been involved in projects focusing on making AI more accessible and applicable in real-world contexts. His work on AI for industrial use aimed to create systems that could be understood by engineers and trusted by operators. He also researches on AI’s role in cultural heritage preservation, where the goal is to explore how technology can help document and safeguard history for future generations. Simultaneously, Grzegorz J. Nalepa collaborates with legal experts to address AI technologies’ ethical and legal implications.
“AI has incredible potential, but we must ensure that it benefits society. By considering the societal, ethical and legal aspects, we can address some of the major concerns surrounding this technology”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
This holistic approach to AI is what drives much of his current research.
About Grzegorz J. Nalepa
Grzegorz J. Nalepa completed his undergraduate education with a Master of Science in Computer Science from AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland, in 1999. He then obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the same institution in 2004, with a dissertation titled “Meta-Level Approach to Integrated Process of Design and Implementation of Rule-Based Systems.” In 2015, he was appointed Docent at AGH University of Science and Technology. His academic achievements led to his promotion to Professor of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 by the President of the Republic of Poland. In 2020, he was further promoted to Full Professor at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. Most recently, in 2024, he was appointed Professor of Machine Learning at Halmstad University, funded by the ELLIIT Excellence Centre in Sweden.
He will be inaugurated at the Academic Ceremony on 15 November.
Research as a collaborative effort
For Grzegorz J. Nalepa, being a professor is not just about conducting research but about fostering creativity and collaboration.
“Research isn’t just about science – it’s about people. I always say that scientific discovery is more about construction and invention. We build mental models, gather data, and create scientific methods, often using mathematical formalism, but it’s our creativity that drives it”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
He believes that research is a collaborative effort, and he is passionate about working in teams, particularly international ones.
“These days, research is rarely done in isolation. Collaborating with creative and motivated people worldwide is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Plus, travelling to different countries and experiencing diverse cultures adds another layer of richness to the work”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
Environment for exploration
At Halmstad University, Grzegorz J. Nalepa appreciates the positive and collaborative atmosphere that distinguishes the institution from more competitive environments.
“In Halmstad, we focus on collaboration and shared growth, which creates a fruitful environment for exploration. In contrast, competition can hinder collaboration at some other universities,” says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
The city itself is also a source of inspiration.
“I grew tired of big, crowded cities. Here in Halmstad, I love the proximity to nature and the sea”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
Looking towards the future, Grzegorz J. Nalepa is excited about the potential for interdisciplinary projects at Halmstad University. With a strong foundation in technological and ethical perspectives, he hopes to continue leading research advancing AI and addressing its broader implications for society.
“I am eager to use my broad background to propose innovative projects that might not seem obvious at first glance”, says Grzegorz J. Nalepa.
