I am associate professor (docent) / senior lecturer in biology with teaching in the education programs Conservation and biodiversity, Applied environmental sciences as well as Environment, Innovation and Sustainability.
The aim of my research is to foster biodiversity in human-dominated landscapes by (re)creating living landscapes with flourishing ecosystem services thereby promoting sustainable resource use under current and future climates to develop sustainable and resilient agriculture. Much of my work centres on pollinators, key providers of ecosystem services for crop production and contributors to sustainability and resilience in farming systems.
I work across scales, from local habitats to entire landscapes and in different tiers, laboratory, mesocosms and field. My research focuses on how anthropogenic stressors affect species fitness, communities, populations, biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural areas, how landscape elements support biodiversity, and how new strategies and tools can mitigate human impacts, often in the frameworks of agroecology, regenerative agriculture and IPPM – integrated pest and pollinator management.
Within this framework, I study three major stressors—pesticides, resource availability shaped by land-use change, and climate change—both individually and in combination. I apply multidisciplinary approaches linking agroecology, aquatic ecology, chemical ecology, ecotoxicology, climatology and economics, considering both animal and plant perspectives and not least the perspectives of farmers and authorities.
