More applicants than ever before to the University’s programmes

Never before has the number of first-hand applicants to the University’s programmes been as many as ahead of autumn semester 2024. This is shown by the figures after the application period for university studies this autumn closed on 15 April. The bachelor’s programmes have 11 percent more first-hand applicants than last year.

Ahead of the autumn semester 2023, Halmstad University was one of the few universities with an increased number of first-hand applicants to programme studies, and that trend continues for the autumn semester 2024. Applications to the University’s bachelor’s programmes have increased by 11 percent compared to last year, which means that the number of first-hand applicants is higher than ever.

“The application figures show that the University’s programmes are attractive and in demand. The bachelor’s programme with the biggest increase of first-hand applicants is Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), which increased by 89 percent – an education that is obviously just right for our current times”, says Pro Vice-Chancellor Malin Hallén.

For a couple of years, Halmstad University has had a special focus on deficit professions such as engineers and teachers in the recruitment campaign. Several of the programmes in these areas have more applicants this year than before.

“Happily, the number of first-hand applicants to our engineering programmes is increasing in general. It is primarily our civil engineering programmes that are increasing, but the number of first-hand applicants to the access programme Technical Foundation year is also increasing. Regarding our teacher programmes, we are mainly increasing the number of first-hand applicants for the Pre-School Teacher Education which is especially pleasing after it has gone slightly downward a few years”, says Head of Communications Selma Sedelius.

A total of 21,870 applications have been made to the University’s programmes and courses for autumn 2024 – of which 5,766 are first-hand applications. Like last year, the most applied programme is IT Forensics and Information Security. Among the most popular programmes are also the Social Work Programme, the Study Programme in Business and Economics, the Nursing programme and the programme Criminology and Culture.

“IT forensics and Information Security is a sought-after education that for a long time we were completely alone in Sweden to offer. It has proven to be right in the middle of social development and the students are very attractive on the job market after their education”, says Pro Vice-Chancellor Malin Hallén and concludes:

“I´m glad to see that there are so many different types of educations at the top – in everything from technology and social-and behavioural science to economics, healthcare and the humanities.”
