Semicon Sweden – a forum for stakeholders in the Swedish semiconductor ecosystem

Semicon Sweden is a national initiative aimed at strengthening Sweden’s position in Europe within the semiconductor sector. By coordinating the Swedish semiconductor ecosystem and conducting advocacy work both nationally and at the EU level, we are reinforcing Sweden’s position with the long-term goal of becoming a significant player in strategically important technology areas such as advanced semiconductors, AI, and quantum technology.

Sweden has several highly specialised nodes of expertise in semiconductors and semiconductor materials, but until now, has lacked national coordination. With Semicon Sweden, we are laying the foundation for broad national collaboration, with representation from across the entire value chain: small, medium-sized, and large companies, incubators and science parks, competence centres, as well as academia, research institutes, and industry.

Semicon Sweden is a forum for all stakeholders in the Swedish semiconductor ecosystem and a collective expert group. The forum, led by Svensk Elektronik, Sweden’s leading industry association for industrial electronics, includes stakeholders such as Halmstad University, RISE, Lund University, Ideon Science Park, and PhotonicSweden.

Semicon Sweden focuses on:

  • Building capacity and knowledge across the entire semiconductor value chain.
  • Strengthening and highlighting Sweden’s areas of excellence, innovations, and initiatives within the semiconductor sector.
  • Developing a strategy for niche semiconductor production in Sweden.
  • Enhancing Sweden’s international cooperation in research and innovation.

What is a semiconductor?

Semiconductors are materials whose electrical conductivity can be controlled so that they either conduct electric current or do not. Semiconductors are at the heart of technological innovation and are essential to both today’s and tomorrow’s modern information society. They also play a crucial role in the green and digital transitions.

An ecosystem for innovation and industrial growth

Semicon Sweden will work closely with the Swedish Chips Competence Centre (SCCC), one of several competence centres in Europe dedicated to conducting research and education in areas important for sustainable industry and digital societal transformation. These centres will be specialised in various key areas and play a fundamental role in strengthening Europe’s innovation ecosystem for semiconductors by providing companies with vital resources for developing semiconductor solutions – including support, training, and access to infrastructure facilities established under the Chips Act, such as pilot lines and design platforms.

The initiative aims to create a strong ecosystem for innovation and industrial growth by linking academia, industry, and research institutes together. The goal is to:

  • develop, disseminate, and apply new knowledge and groundbreaking technologies to strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness.
  • attract more investment and top-level expertise for world-leading research and development in Sweden.
  • reinforce Sweden’s role in European collaborations, including the EU’s Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU, also known as the EU semiconductor programme).

Through the Swedish Chips Competence Centre (SCCC), Swedish stakeholders have access to established semiconductor pilot lines within the EU Chips JU.
