The University continues to rent Patrikshill for international students
The University has been given permission by Halmstad Municipality’s building committee to continue to use Patrikshill as student accommodation for up to 100 international students for another five years. At the same time, the University is working together with both the municipality and property owners to increase the amount of student housing in Halmstad in the long run.
“More housing for both Swedish and international students is one of the most important issues that we are pursuing as a student union and the need is still enormous."
Linnea Håkansson, President Halmstad Student Union
A new local plan is being developed for the campus area. It includes housing, for both students and other Halmstad residents, and HFAB has already bought properties to be able to build, among other things, student housing on the campus area.
“It is very positive that we can continue to supply housing for students at Patrikshill for another five years, so that we can continue the work of finding a permanent solution for our need for student housing on campus for our exchange students and international students. We are working in parallel to find permanent solutions for student housing, both for all our students and especially for exchange students”, says the University's Property Manager Rikard Ahlgren.
“More housing for both Swedish and international students is one of the most important issues that we are pursuing as a student union and the need is still enormous – in Halmstad, around 1,000 student apartments are needed to reach a good level. But in the short term, it is good that we have been able to extend the temporary solution for the international students, who have particular difficulty finding accommodation in the public housing market, because they are here for a short time and need furnished and equipped apartments, but do not have their own network of contacts or knowledge of the Swedish housing market”, says Student Union President Linnea Håkansson.

Exchange students and international students at Halmstad University
At Halmstad University, 474 international students and 240 exchange students were admitted in 2023. The exchange students usually stay for one semester, while international students stay for several semesters, depending on the course or education they are taking.
Since 2022, government run higher education institutions have the opportunity to rent a number of apartments and then in turn sublet them to international students and researchers. Previously, it was only allowed for exchange students and visiting researchers, while other groups of students and researchers were relegated to the open housing market.
