Associate Professor in Biology, Senior Lecturer Halmstad University and Researcher Lund University, Department of Biology.
I have a broad interest in aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology and molecular biology. During my career, I have mainly worked with how climate change and variations in environmental factors affect social structure, biodiversity and ecosystem processes. I am currently conducting applied research where I evaluate nature conservation measures. I focus on how wetlands should be designed to reduce the transport of organic material from land to aquatic environments and thereby reduce environmental problems such as eutrophication, browning (increased water color) and hypoxia. The work is done in close collaboration with stakeholders and focuses on water resource management but also sustainable forestry and agriculture for increased water quality. I also participate in a project that evaluates the effect of various restoration measures in rivers to maintain ecosystem services and biodiversity. The project focuses on fish populations and whether increased connectivity leads to increased gene flow and more viable populations. I am also working on evaluating whether eDNA can be used to determine both population structure and population size for salmon (Salmo salar) and trout (S. trutta) in order to develop new tools for effective fisheries management.
Present research project:
"Land, rivers and the sea: Mechanisms and measures to reduce hypoxia and brownification in the Baltic Sea" funded by the research council FORMAS.
"Expanding the fisheries management toolbox with population genetic eDNA methods" funded by Naturvårdsverket (Swedish EPA) and FORMAS.
