Ross James Friel's main research focuses on advanced materials and digital manufacturing processes to bring about new engineering capabilities in electronics, composites, sensors, and devices. This is primarily achieved through exploration and boundary-pushing of 3D Printing, Additive and Hybrid Manufacturing techniques applied to new areas of scientific and engineering innovation.
Academic title: Docent.

Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM - a solid-state metal process that can permit embedded electronics within metal matrix composites); Additive Manufacturing & In-Situ Resource Utilisation (3D printing on the Moon, Mars and in Space); 3D Printing for Electromagnetic Applications (radar lenses and other components); Additive Manufacturing for Hard X-ray Synchrotron Applications (for serial crystallography and other techniques); Embedding Electronics; Complex Microfluidics and Mechatronics.
